The peanut plant is also known as “Lạc” (Northern dialect), “Đậu phết” (Southern dialect), or “đậu phụng” (Central dialect).
It is an annual herbaceous plant that can grow to a height of 30–50 cm. The leaves are opposite, compound, pinnate with four leaflets, each leaflet measuring 1–7 cm long and 1–3 cm wide. The flowers are typical yellow pea-like inflorescences with red veins, and the flower stalks are 2–4 cm long. After pollination, the fruit develops into a pod-like structure 3–7 cm long, containing 1–4 seeds (pods), and the fruit (pod) is usually hidden underground to develop. In the scientific name of this plant, the species name includes hypogaea, meaning “underground,” referring to the characteristic of the fruit being hidden underground. Peanuts (peanut pods) are a very energy-rich food due to their high lipid content.
